We are seeking a highly creative and motivated synthetic Formulation Scientist to develop new materials made from recycled plastic feedstocks. This role requires a broad range of knowledge and experience in various polymerization methods, polymer related product processing, formulations, and familiarity with analytical techniques used in polymer and polymer related products. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a dynamic, start-up environment and be able prioritize tasks to meet company goals. They will also have interests and a willingness to take on relatively undefined challenges, excellent problem-solving abilities, creativity and the ability to work in cross-functional teams.
This is a full-time position in Menlo Park, CA, with a competitive salary and stock options.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct research and experiments in the lab to develop innovative materials from unique recycled plastic feedstocks
Interact closely with business development to develop comprehensive and differentiated products for market
Highly active in intellectual property creation
PhD in polymer science or similar; 4+ years industrial experience in an R&D setting
Experience designing and synthesizing polyols, polyurethanes and polyesters is an asset
Must be able to execute research projects independently
In-depth knowledge of structure-property relations and materials properties; ability to design materials to desired properties
Fundamental understanding and knowledge of polymerization reaction mechanisms, catalysts, polymer structure, testing and characterization methodologies
Familiarity with basic physical, chemical and analytical techniques for polymer and materials characterization
Must have experience optimizing chemical reactions or processes
Must be willing to work with hazardous chemicals and show commitment to maintaining safe working laboratory practices
