We are seeking an R&D Chemist to develop techniques, methods and optimized processes for converting waste plastic to value-added chemicals. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a dynamic, start-up environment and be able to prioritize tasks to meet company goals. They will also have interests and a willingness to take on relatively undefined challenges, excellent problem-solving abilities, creativity and the ability to work in cross-functional teams.
This is a full-time position in Menlo Park, CA, with a competitive salary and stock options.
Duties and Responsibilities
Use knowledge of organic chemistry and engineering to develop solutions for process improvement and optimization
Develop and formulate new processes in the broad fields of organic oxidation chemistry, decomposition reactions or related chemical recycling methods
Participate in intellectual property creation
Must be able to execute research projects independently
Must have experience with one or more of the following: organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, oxidation reactions, pyrolysis, catalysis.
PhD in organic chemistry or polymer science or similar; 3-5 years industrial experience in an R&D setting
Must have experience with distillation/evaporation/extraction and other chemical wet lab techniques
Must be able to follow detailed chemical processes to a high degree of quality and accuracy
Must have experience optimizing chemical reactions or processes
Must be willing to work with hazardous chemicals and show commitment to maintaining safe working laboratory practices
‘Swiss army knife’ chemist (ability to engage with many different chemical processes and systems)
Proven problem-solving skills
Knowledge of, or experience using, GCMS/LCMS/FTIR/NMR
Knowledge of other chemical recycling methods
